Diabetes Mellitus is Associated with Accelerated Adverse Cardiac Remodeling in Patients with Hypertension: the REMODEL Study

Speakers: Calvin Chin, M.D., Ph.D. (Director of CMR Center at the National Heart Centre Singapore)

Original Broadcast date:  November 17, 2021

Myocardial remodeling characterized by inflammation and fibrosis occurs prior to symptomatic hypertension (HTN). Moreover, patients with high blood pressure have an additive risk of diabetes mellitus (DM). Thus, the early diagnosis and intervention of HTN patients is important. In this webinar, Dr. Chin shows how OlinkĀ® Target platform was employed to 1) compare cardiac remodeling profiles between hypertensive patients (n = 377) with and without diabetes, and 2) compare protein signature profiles associated with myocardial fibrosis (MF) in hypertensive patients with and without diabetes in blood. The data reveal unique and overlapping protein signatures between HTN+, HTN+/DM+, and HTN+/DM+/MF+ patients. In addition, these data demonstrate that DM is associated with accelerated cardiac remodeling in HTN.

The webinar covers the following points:

  • Biological processes associated with increased cell death observed in both HTN+/MF+ patients with and without diabetes
  • Greater activation in inflammatory response and immune cell trafficking were observed in patients with HTN+/DM+/MF+ than HTN+/MF+
  • 6 unique and differentially expressed proteins in HTN+ patients were identified, which have known roles in cardiovascular disease and function
